A Question by a fifth year student
Question
What is the influence of eugenol containing
temporary cements on composite bonding?
Answer
Eugenol-containing provisional material was found to affect
the bond strength to resin restoration/cement, but this effect
was not statistically significant within seven-days .
However, some studies claimed that
this effect could be significant when shorter duration, or
different adhesive systems were employed. Therefore, more
studies are needed for stronger evidence on the effect of
eugenol containing temporaries on the bond strength under
controlled variables.
Procedure
1. Use Eugenol-containing temporary as
directed by manufacturers.
2. Wait at least for one week
prior to replacement of
eugenol-containing temporary
materials with resinous final
materials .
3.Remove Eugenol properly from the tooth structure before bonding.
4. Perform proper bonding technique for dentin.
Dual bonding procedure is
recommended before
temporization.
Dual bonding technique :
1. Apply
dentin bonding agent on dentin surface and light cure
2.
Add Zinc oxide eugenol for 1 week
3.
Remove ZOE temporary filling
4. Apply
dentin bonding agent again together with
composite and light cure.
